Chriss Langworthy

My work focuses and explores animals, birds or people in their personal space. I am interested in the size of space that we perceive as acceptable, how our movements or the movements of others affect it and therefore our emotions.

My work involves a reasonable amount of investigation and observation and I use the process of drawing and painting to get ideas down. Sometimes these ideas work as actual paintings and sometimes they don't. My series on flowers came about because I was intrigued when seeing what I would call a domestic flower such as a tulip push up through a rough patch of ground seeming to fight for its own space to survive; I ended up painting a series of paintings using flowers I found in similar situations.

In spring it is always good to watch the birds gather moss, grasses and other such items to start building their nests. I have used some of these little creatures as a focus in my paintings; they fly through the trees and bushes using such tiny spaces, yet seeming to have a vast space in which to move. I interpret my work using a variety of media such as oil, acrylic, crochet, wire and stitch.
